To the Moon, Fin Fang Foon: Hulk Vs. Fin Fang Foon

It’s a good thing I wasn’t the writer for the Hulk Vs. Fin Fang Foon One-Shot. The battle ends (spoiler), with the Hulk spinning the giant green dragon Fin Fang Foon by the tail and launching him into space where he crashes on the moon. How could the writer resist the punchline “To the moon, Fin Fang Foon!” The real writer Peter David is more adept than me at maintaining the “serious” style of contemporary comics, but you have to admit, a comic where Hulk fights a dragon in purple short-shorts (they both wear purple short-shorts) should be a bit lighthearted (by the way, this isn’t the first time Hulk has fought a dragon. See Incredible Hulk 247 for another dance with dragons).

Hulk Vs. Fin Fang Foon begins with the Hulk stumbling around a tundra as if he was at the tail end of a global pub crawl. He collapses into the snow where he reverts to his puny Bruce Banner form, where he’s thankfully rescued by passers-by. That people happen to be in the area is just one of the big coincidences that propels the plot. The second is that Fin Fang Foon just happens to be trapped under the ice not too far away. Thinking the giant reptile shape below them is a frozen dinosaur, scientists crack the ice only to inadvertantly free Fin Fang Foon, who decides to attack everyone for no particular reason. Again, as fate would have it, the man they saved earlier happens to be the Hulk, and so the title fight begins…

If you have a subscription to the Marvel site, you can read Hulk Vs. Fin Fang Foon for free. Otherwise, I wouldn’t recommend going too far out of your way to find this issue. It’s penciled by Jorge Lucas, who does a great job drawing the arctic setting and manages to come up with poses for Fin Fang Foon that makes him look less like a cardboard cutout than dragons usually appear in art (for a great example of dragon art, check out the painting by J. Allen St. John). Jorge Lucas however doesn’t draw people as well as he does everything else. The way he draws faces resembles old romance comics more than action comics.
