Dark Reign-The List: Amazing Spider-Man One-Shot #1 is exceptional for more than it’s ungainly long title and its reckless use of hyphens. First off, it features Spider-Man taking the fight to Osborn, something every reader would have expected him to do sooner and more often as soon as Dark Reign started. If you’re unfamiliar with Marvel’s many metamorphoses, Dark Reign (2009) was a period of interconnected stories where Norman Osborn, aka The Green Goblin, asserted himself into the United States gov’t as the director of H.A.M.M.E.R., a a role similar to homeland security in the real world. It came about in the aftermath of Secret Invasion, when Osborn managed to be at the right place at the right time and completely remade his PR in the public’s eyes, going from being a psychopath to a war hero overnight. To be honest, I don’t fully understand how this happened, since it was generally known that Osborn was the Green Goblin, but oh well, there’s always plot-holes when you’re dealing with stories that have gone on for decades…
The main reason though why I’d recommend you dig through long boxes or check this issue out in digital form is the art. The pencils come from Adam Kubert, part of one of the most fantastic families in comics outside of the Fantastic Four (one of the others being John Romita Sr. and Jr.). His father was the iconic Joe Kubert, a game changer who not only brought in a fresh style to the comics world but also taught others how to do it too. His brother is Andy Kubert, who has done a lot of fine work for DC in recent years, such as drawing Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader (written by Neil Gaiman) and drawing all of the main Flashpoint series. This is the first time I’ve seen Adam’s work and I was in awe of it. You will rarely see more detailed mainstream comics than this. The inks by Mark Morales and colors by Dean White compliment Adam’s drawings perfectly, making this a stand-out issue you will want to look at more than once.
